Purchasing New Pallets vs. Used Pallets

While this is not always the case, most pallet manufacturers will sell both new and used pallets.

Sometimes used pallets sell more quickly than new ones, depending on the type of pallet they are selling or refurbishing and the equipment that the plant uses to manufacture its pallets. There is a big cost differential in the cost of different pallets, with new wood pallets typically selling for around $9 a piece and new plastic pallets selling at around $60 a piece. While plastic pallets are incredibly durable, they often need more customization to fit a particular product. If you need to ship products that are incredibly heavy, and on pallets that can withstand the harshest weather conditions, than metal pallets are the way to go. Of course these pallets will come with a larger price tag.

Stringer and block are two of the most common types of wood pallets, although there are many variations possible. There is no longer just a simple pallet that a buyer needs to research. Some of the options available today include the single-faced pallet, the flush pallet, either reversible or non-reversible, the skid, and the single or double wind pallet. Of course, this is just a small sampling of the choices when it comes to pallets.

Many of today’s pallets are custom built using the assistance of computer added design. This could be a big help when first deciding which type of pallet you need. These new software programs actually use the customer’s unique specifications to design the pallet, and then guides all the steps of the manufacturing process. The software will even evaluation the load the pallet is going to carry and indicate where reinforcement of the pallet is needed.

After They've Built the Pallet
Anytime you manufacture a product you are going to have some waste. Leftovers are not an issue with corrugated pallets as they are recycled several times. Wood pallet pieces can be reused to make toys, planter boxes, or any variety of items. The wood can also be turned into chips which can be used for animal bedding or ground covering. The metal used to make metal pallets can be used to create artistic pieces, or melted down and used for other applications.
